Medicine

If you're interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, exploring medicine-related volunteer opportunities and internships can provide invaluable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the healthcare world. Whether you choose to volunteer at a hospital, engage in clinical research, or join medical missions, these experiences will undoubtedly shape your future in medicine.

Volunteer

Consider volunteering at a hospital. Many hospitals offer fulfilling volunteer opportunities for teenagers eager to make a meaningful impact on patient care and gain invaluable insights within the healthcare realm.

If you're a teen volunteer, you'll get an insider's look at working in a hospital, which may help you determine if you want to continue your education in healthcare. Having clinical and patient exposure will also help your applications to medical and professional schools.

Our volunteers get to see world-class healthcare in action while they learn new skills. Volunteers also find that working with patients gives them the meaningful satisfaction of helping others while learning customer service and professional skills at the same time.

Washington Health System can offer our local teens unique and rewarding volunteer opportunities. Teens must be at least 14 years old and must show proof of COVID immunization prior to starting to be eligible. Teens are accepted into the program three times a year—January, May, and September.  The minimum commitment is 2 – 3 days each month, 3 – 4 hours each day. A teen must be willing to volunteer at least 50 hours in a calendar year.

Volunteers have served our patients and families, including our most vulnerable populations, since we began in 1907. Volunteers are essential to our success. We bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive environment to support the needs of our patients and families. When you volunteer, you join an impactful team that is the heart of Seattle Children's.

Internships

Consider interning in the medical field as a young aspiring professional. Numerous medical institutions provide enriching internship opportunities for teenagers eager to actively contribute to patient care and acquire priceless knowledge within the healthcare domain.

If you’re a mission-focused, actively enrolled undergrad or graduate student seeking meaningful work experience, we invite you to apply for internship opportunities. Internships allow you to explore and enrich your future career prospects. American Red Cross interns are involved in projects critical to the day-to-day work of our organization, gaining an insider’s perspective on our humanitarian mission.

There are departments offering internships and residencies, like physical therapy and nursing. Most of them require you to be in university or a graduate.

Be on the lookout for internships posted on LinkedIn (or Indeed!). Many companies actively post internship openings on their LinkedIn pages, making it a valuable resource for internship seekers.
